Our Story

Good Management Group was created following a merger between environmental consultancy Totem Sustainability run by Ian Dodd and social impact consultancy, CSR Management, run by Dan Smith.

Our co-founder Dan remembers…

“Several years ago, I was on a work trip to New Delhi, India. I was staying in a 5* hotel, being driven from meeting to meeting in executive cars and working on the 34th floor of an office near the airport — plush, open-plan, air-conditioned. I remember nothing of the meetings I had that day because I was watching a boy playing with a tyre, near his home. I knew I needed to remember how it made me feel so I took a photo. This is the photo that started it all.

“About 10 minutes later the monsoons came and as I went from meeting to meeting, I knew that day that I wanted to dedicate myself to something that makes a difference. A genuine, tangible, and measurable difference to people around the world but also to the planet. I founded CSR Management Group as a social impact consultancy on my return to the UK and worked with several clients on their CSR policies and strategies. However, to make a lasting difference I needed to offer environmental consultancy services alongside the social impact consultancy. More importantly, I needed a co-founder.”

Enter Ian Dodd, long time friend, environmental sustainability consultant, ISO lead auditor; with a masters in environmental science, and over 15 years of experience working with large corporations and local authorities — measuring and improving their environmental impacts. Ian comments…

“After several years of running a growing sustainability consultancy I was actively looking for a partner to scale and diversify into the social impact areas to complement our experience of environmental sustainability. Having known Dan for close to 20 years, we were instantly aligned on the vision and strategy behind the business.”

Just like that (with a good measure of research and planning), Good Management Group was established.

Since then we’ve taken on projects and clients in fields including real estate, finance, sports, retail, tech, services, and more. From our office in Reading we’re growing rapidly to meet demand for our sustainability consultancy and outsourcing services.
