Sustainability Policy Document

What is a Sustainability Policy?

A sustainability policy is a statement or set of principles that guide your organisation’s approach to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. It is an important tool for promoting responsible business practices, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing your reputation. By setting specific targets and creating a plan for achieving them, you can demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.

At Good Management, our consultants can help your organisation to compile and write a sustainability policy. We ask you some simple questions that get straight to the point of what your business does and what your goals are.  We then run a workshop with your key stakeholders to ensure that your team have bought into the process. Investment starts at £3900 + VAT.

The Importance of Having a Sustainability Policy

First and foremost, a sustainability policy demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. It helps to reduce the environmental impact of operations, promote social responsibility, and enhance the reputation of the organisation.

In addition, sustainability policies can have financial benefits. By reducing waste and energy use, organisations can save money on utilities and other costs. They can also attract customers who are increasingly interested in doing business with companies that prioritise sustainability.

Benefits of a Sustainability Policy

Showcasing the goals set out in your ESG policy is a starting point for your entire ESG strategy and performance. It gives you something you can share with interested parties. You’re doing good work, you’ve got good intentions, so why not shout about it?

An ESG policy can also have significant benefits for your relationships with:

  • Clients
  • Suppliers
  • Investors
  • Current Employees
  • Prospective Employees

Creating a Sustainability Policy

The time where businesses could make token gestures towards fighting the good fight are over. A spotlight of scrutiny is being placed on the values and sustainability goals of companies like never before. It is essential to show you are making a real difference. While the process of developing an ESG strategy is likely to be different for every company starting the journey, there are some important things that should remain consistent:

Assess Your Sustainability

To create a sustainability policy, you should start by analysing and assessing your current sustainability practices then identifying areas for improvement. This could include reducing energy and water use, reducing waste, promoting sustainable transportation and implementing environmentally friendly policies and practices. As part of our 4 step process a comprehensive sustainability review is included, but if you only require a Sustainability Policy then we conduct an initial consultation with you and your team then set to work mapping out priorities for your Policy. The better we understand your business, the more tailored your Sustainability Policy Document will be.

Set Sustainable Goals

Your organisation should set specific, measurable, and achievable sustainability targets. These could include reducing carbon emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy, reducing waste but you should also be considering your social impacts on the community, your people and clients too. Using sustainability reporting frameworks like GRI, TCFD, CDP or SBTi will help you align your sustainability goals with your business ambitions. That’s a lot of acronyms and not all standards are right for all businesses so we’re on hand to help advise you on the most suitable reporting standards for yours.

Plan then Implement

Once your sustainability targets have been set, you should create a plan for achieving them. Your sustainability policy is just words on a document unless you start to plan how it will impact your business. It’s vital that you plan your next steps once your document is complete to ensure that your organisation keeps it’s commitments. Our sustainability consultants can also help our clients to pull together a sustainability roadmap and undertake sustainability training once your document is complete.

Manage and Report

Any credible sustainability policy precedes an annual sustainability report. Reporting on your sustainability policy and your achievements against your goals is an  important step to increasing your transparency. This improves your perception with the public and in your industry and have a significant improvement on the success of your positive impacts. Our sustainability consultants can help you to manage your impacts, improve them, then report on them against the relevant standards.
